A Salute to Valor
Poppy Earrings $35
The following poem was written in 1915 by a Canadian doctor, Major John McCrae, M.D.  During World War I he was appointed field surgeon in the Canadian artillery. When his dear friend, Alexis Helmer, was killed in the Second Battle of Ypres he was inspired to write this moving tribute on May 3, 1915. By reprinting these words nearly 100 years later we salute the Valor of all those who have fallen in the line of duty – both then and now. Here then are his words.
In Flanders Fields
In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.
We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.
Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.
